Thousands of jobs at risk as NMB Capital Expenditure plummets by 9%

BY Athol Trollip, DA Mayoral Candidate: Nelson Mandela Bay

The DA can reveal that in 2015 Nelson Mandela Bay spent R139 471 000 less on capital expenditure than in 2014.

This serves to confirm the current administration’s inability to deliver on basic infrastructure maintenance and job creation promises.

As infrastructure and municipal assets collapse, thousands more jobs will be lost in Nelson Mandela Bay if the current administration is retained.

With a R25 billion infrastructure capital backlog, this municipality can ill-afford to be hoarding money in its bank account, while at the same time shedding tens of thousands of jobs.

Unreliable water and electricity infrastructure is placing huge strain on the industrial and commercial sectors, and crumbling roads are preventing seamless transportation of goods and services.

Infrastructure-led growth is crucial to creating jobs as it provides an environment conducive to private sector investment.

Sustainable industry thrives when infrastructure is well-maintained and excellent services are delivered. In 2014/15, the DA-led City of Cape Town spent R895 million on the growth, refurbishment and replacement on the Metro’s water and sanitation infrastructure. This is because DA-led governments are serious about infrastructure upkeep and job creation.

A DA government in Nelson Mandela Bay will set delivery performance targets in developing a strategic asset management plan and register for municipal infrastructure.

The asset register will be subject to audits which will enhance the sound management of investment, depreciation, capital maintenance and strategic capital planning decisions.

The DA can win Nelson Mandela Bay at this year’s local government election, because our plan to take NMB forward again is resonating with more and more residents.

By investing in infrastructure, growing the economy and creating jobs, a DA government will turn Nelson Mandela Bay around.
