DA will grow NMB tourism, and grow tourism jobs

BY Athol Trollip MPL, Mayoral candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay

At today’s visit to the Springs Holiday Resort in Uitenhage I see a sad confirmation of the neglect of our tourism products by the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality.

Domestic tourism should thrive in Nelson Mandela Bay, so that the tourism economy can grow, creating thousands of jobs and providing opportunities for all. Yet local tourism sites and facilities controlled by the Metro are sadly left to rack and ruin.

Turning around Nelson Mandela Bay’s Tourism Sector can be achieved through the following implementable steps, which the DA would deliver in government.

The DA will create a dedicated tourism and events directorate in council. A new tourism directorate will ensure that there is a focused approach to policy creation and implementation that ensures proper planning and consistency.

We will then immediately revive our stagnant tourism products, to offer affordable fun family holidays that will boost domestic tourism and revenue into the Metro. The facilities exist, but need desperate maintenance and upkeep. Budget for this will be found by cutting wasteful and fruitless expenditure right at the start of the DA’s term of office.

The DA will establish an effective destination marketing organisation through a public-private partnership, a professional and dedicated office that will market NMB to the country and the world.

We will partner with the tourism industry and other spheres of government, to develop within our term of office a dedicated cruise liner terminal ready for passenger ships. This terminal will link directly to wildlife, biodiversity, cultural and heritage tourism in the region.

We will launch issue specific tourism campaigns, where the Metro highlights the potential of our tourism sites, and works with operators to increase traffic to those sites.

We will market NMB to the domestic and regional tourists, so that the African tourist economy makes Nelson Mandela Bay a destination of choice.

We will ensure that ACSA and the Civil Aviation Authority get Port Elizabeth Airport fully upgraded to world-class standard, with investments from the Metro to improve surrounding infrastructure, to invite more regional and international flights.

The DA understands the importance of growing the economy and accelerating job creation. Therefore visits of all tourist locations across the Metro will be included in the 60 wards in 60 days campaign.

The DA is committed to building a caring, safe and inclusive Metro that is forward-looking and well-run.This must be achieved by starting delivery, stopping corruption and creating jobs.
