R70 million for KSD flood victims nowhere to be seen

BY Councillor Thembalihle Xhangayi, OR Tambo District Municipality

Nothing has been done by the ANC government to assist the 859 families from King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality that were left homeless nearly three months ago due to a natural disaster.

The Eastern Cape Province promised R70 million towards assisting and supporting the affected communities, yet the communities claim to have only received a few food parcels from Municipal officials and are complaining about no further assistance. Assessments have also not yet been made to each and every affected house in order to rebuild the damaged houses.

The community is also still waiting for temporary tents that they were promised and are in the meantime forced to find other means of shelter from an uncaring ANC government.

Community members cannot continue to suffer due to being neglected by an uncaring ANC government.

The DA will press MEC of Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs, Fikile Xasa, to provide residents with relevant rebuilding starter-kits, as required, including building materials.

I have also tabled a question to the Executive Mayor of OR Tambo District Municipality, Nomakhosazana Meth, for an explanation of the slow progress.

The ANC governments both at Province and Local Government levels must account for this terrible, uncaring situation.
