DA to do oversight visits to Life Esidimeni Frail Care Centres threatened with closure

BY Kobus Botha (MPL), Shadow MEC for Social Development

The DA will be conducting oversight visits to the Algoa Frail Care Centre in Bethelsdorp and the Lorraine Frail Care Centre tomorrow to see for ourselves what impact the closure of these facilities will have on patients and their families.

This follows the shock decision by the Department of Social Development that it will no longer be funding the two centres, run by the Life Esidimeni Healthcare Services.

DA Shadow MEC for Finance and PE Southwest constituency leader Bobby Stevenson and I will visit both centres to empower ourselves with as much information as possible to raise the practical implications of the closure of the two centres in the legislature.

We will fight this decision tooth and nail.  A caring government would never abandon the frailest people in our society.  Patients in frail care require full-time nursing assistance.  The DA will not rest until we are assured that these patients are treated with dignity and with respect.
